The road to Wembley started with Crook Town the visitors to Sam Smith’s Park, with Shildon being the opposition in the next round for the winners. The first shot of the game was by Benfield midfielder Ryan McGorrigan, who saw his effort well blocked by Crook Town defender Leo Kirkbride for a corner.   The wind was with Benfield in the first half and they made the most of it, opening the scoring in the sixth minute.

Newly promoted side Pickering Town were the visitors to Sam Smith’s Park for the first home game of the season.   Benfield started brightly and should have scored in the 3rd minute when a cross from Aiden Haley found Cameron Gascoigne who miss-hit a good opportunity resulting in the ball being cleared away.   Only 8 minutes had passed before the opening goal arrived, with Pickering scoring on their first attack. This game saw the start of the new season with all the pre-season games finished and all the new instructions in training from coach Colin Stromsoy to be brought into action.   After a month of pre-season training and all of the new signings getting to know their team mates, it only took four minutes for Benfield to concede their first goal of the season.   It came with a fine three man move down the Benfield

It’s an obvious statement that goals win games and so it proved once again in Newcastle Benfield’s trip down to Yorkshire to play Bridlington Town.  Although three goals were conceded it could have been a different match if Benfield had taken their chances.  As early as the first minute Benfield had a goal scoring chance, a long pass from Connor Walker found Ryan McGorrigan who saw his well struck effort well save by the Bridlington
